We arrived in Victoria Falls midday and, after settling in at the Victoria Falls Safari Lodge, ended the day with a sunset cruise on the Zambezi River aboard the elegant Ra-Ikane. It was the perfect way to unwind while soaking in the beauty, wildlife, and serenity of this incredible corner of Zimbabwe.
A Classic Zambezi Experience
Named after one of David Livingstone’s river guides, the Ra-Ikane is a small, luxury boat that captures the romantic charm of early African exploration. As we stepped aboard, we were greeted with warm smiles and a chilled welcome drink — the first of many — before gliding gently out onto the Zambezi.

The pace was slow and peaceful, the kind of calm that instantly melts away the travel fatigue. The air was warm, the water shimmered gold in the late afternoon light, and the only sounds were birds calling and the distant rumble of Victoria Falls upstream.
Wildlife Along the Zambezi River
Within minutes, we spotted our first hippos bobbing in the shallows, their ears and eyes breaking the surface as they watched us drift past. Then came a herd of elephants, crossing through the reeds to drink from the riverbank — an unforgettable sight in the soft, glowing light of sunset.
Our guide pointed out a variety of birds along the shoreline — from colorful bee-eaters darting through the air to elegant herons and kingfishers waiting patiently for their next catch. The Zambezi felt alive, a moving canvas of wildlife, light, and reflection.

Drinks, Canapés, and the Setting Sun
As the sun began to dip, the crew served drinks and canapés — crisp white wine, local beer, and platters of savory bites and fresh fruit. The combination of flavors, the gentle sway of the boat, and the fiery orange sky mirrored on the water created an unforgettable moment of tranquility.
It was the kind of scene that makes you put the camera down and simply take it all in — the stillness, the color, and the sound of hippos grunting nearby as the sun disappeared beyond the horizon.

The Perfect Start to Our Victoria Falls Adventure
The Ra-Ikane sunset cruise perfectly captured everything I love about Zimbabwe — warmth, wildlife, and wonder. It’s peaceful yet full of life, luxurious without being over the top, and timed perfectly for that magical golden-hour glow.
If you’re visiting Victoria Falls, don’t miss this experience. Whether you’re a photographer chasing the perfect sunset, a wildlife lover hoping to spot elephants and hippos, or simply looking for a beautiful, relaxing way to start your adventure, a Zambezi River sunset cruise aboard the Ra-Ikane is truly unforgettable.
Tips for Your Ra-Ikane Sunset Cruise on the Zambezi
1. Book in advance. The Ra-Ikane cruises are small and intimate, so they fill up quickly—especially around peak season (June–October). Reserve ahead if you want a sunset slot.
2. Bring your camera (and binoculars!).
The lighting is spectacular in the late afternoon, perfect for photographing elephants, hippos, and birds. A zoom lens or binoculars make a big difference.
3. Don’t forget sunscreen and a hat. Evening sun on the Zambezi can still be strong, especially if you’re seated on the open deck.
4. Dress comfortably, but smart. The atmosphere is relaxed but elegant. Lightweight, neutral clothing is perfect—something you can wear straight from a day of exploring Victoria Falls.
5. Arrive a bit early. You’ll enjoy a welcome drink and can settle in for a smooth departure while the light is still golden.
6. Try both the drinks and the canapés. The crew keeps glasses full and trays of local snacks coming—don’t skip the fresh fruit or savory bites.
7. Keep an eye on the riverbanks. Wildlife sightings can happen anytime—elephants, crocodiles, and birds often appear just before sunset.
8. Enjoy the moment. Put the camera down for a few minutes and soak in the quiet, the colors, and the sounds of the Zambezi. It’s one of the most peaceful experiences in Victoria Falls.
